Club of the Month - October

Club Name: The Uni Care Project

About the Club:

Currently, we have two big projects.  The first is an Art Program for Homeless Children (which we started in July) where we provide a monthly art class for children at American Family Housing in Midway City (near Westminster).  Our second project aims to bring healing and inspiration to vulnerable and in-crisis children by making laminated card quilts filled with beautiful pictures and positive messages.  The organization we are currently providing the card quilts for is Olive Crest, a foster care organization that serves children who have been abused.

We are also planning an Easter Party for the homeless children and families of American Family Housing.  We helped organize an Easter party with the shelter last school year in April 2011.  We volunteered and provided games, prizes, face-painting, and balloon art. We funded this by selling Korean barbeque during Uni's Clubapalooza and by using a $500 grant we received from DoSomething.org.  We use the rest of the grant money to fund the Art Program for Homeless Children.

Another project from last year that we'll be doing again is a gift-wrapping fundraiser so that we can continue to fund our projects.

Some other projects from last year that we did include: Organizing the making of 7,677 origami cranes to raise funds for the rebuilding efforts in Japan (through the organization Students Rebuild) and provide children's clothes (through the children's clothing store Oshkosh B'gosh); Participated with various groups and after school programs to make nearly 400 Valentines cards for hospitalized children in Miller's Hospital and CHOC; and, participating in the Center for Living peace's Working Groups event to launch a community service project (the card quilts for children in crisis) in honor of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Lastly, we are also a Do Something club and have received over 10,700 Facebook likes for our club activities.  You can reach our Do Something page through this link: http://www.dosomething.org/club/creating-change
